Note: You can read the blog post version of this podcast here: How to find a job with no experience in a recessionSummary:
There are four ways to aid your job search if you are a recent college graduate. They are:
- Create your own internship
- focus on something that you want to do, and look at companies in your area that are doing it
- talk to startups, specifically CEO’s or founders
- learn about the company and show how you can add value
- Should you work for free? Ask startup to pay a small amount instead
- Be willing to relocate
- cast your net wider
- NOT a commitment to the area, because most of Generation Y leaves their first job within 2 years
- Go full time with your part-time job
- Calling all waitresses, sales associates, bartenders
- You are more qualified than people who have been in the workforce longer
- Do project work
- Check out elance.com and craigslist.org
- Work for computer programmers, writers, yard workers, cleaners, plus creative jobs (like photography)
The bottom line is there’s no excuse to sit at home! Use these four ideas to pass the time while waiting for your first “real” job.
